Mission Mausam is a flagship program launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) . Its primary goal is to enhance India’s weather forecasting and climate research capabilities.
With the allocation of ₹2000 crores, it is for investing in advanced technologies and infrastructure.
Mission Mausam aims to provide more accurate and timely weather predictions, thereby improving disaster preparedness and management.

Key Objectives:
- Improved Weather Forecasting: Enhance the accuracy and lead time of weather forecasts, especially for extreme events like cyclones, floods, and droughts.
- Climate Research: Advance understanding of climate processes and patterns, including long-term climate change trends.
- Disaster Management: Enhance India’s capacity to respond to natural disasters and minimize their impact.
- Technological Advancement: Develop and deploy advanced technologies for weather observation, modeling, and forecasting.
- International Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships with other countries and organizations in the field of meteorology and climate science.
- Key Components:
- Expanded Observation Network: Deployment of advanced radars, satellites, and wind profilers to gather comprehensive weather data.
- High-Performance Computing: Use of supercomputers for complex weather modeling and data analysis.
- Advanced Technologies: Integration of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and geographic information systems (GIS) for data analysis and forecasting.
- A cloud-simulation chamber at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. This will in
the years to come help model rain clouds with great precision. - Climate Research Initiatives: Support research projects on climate change, climate variability, and climate impacts.
- Capacity Building: Enhance the skills and expertise of meteorologists and climate scientists through training programs and workshops.
Expected Outcomes: - Aiming to procure and install up to 60weather radars, 15 wind
profilers, and 15 radiosondes. - Accurate and Timely Forecasts: Provide reliable weather forecasts for various sectors, including agriculture, transportation, and energy..
- Sustainable Development: Support sustainable development by providing climate information for decision-making.
- International Leadership: Position India as a global leader in meteorology and climate science.
Mission Mausam is a significant step towards building a more resilient and informed India. - By investing in weather and climate science, the government aims to protect lives and livelihoods from the impacts of extreme weather events and climate change.
