Entod Pharmaceuticals(Mumbai) has announced that the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI)  the country’s apex drug regulator  has approved its new eye drop, which has been “specifically developed to reduce dependency on the reading glasses for individuals affected by presbyopia.”

What is Presbyopia?

-Presbyopia is an age-related disorder in which the eyes gradually lose their capacity to concentrate on nearby objects. People typically develop presbyopia around the age of 40.

-Doctors believe that spectacles are one of the most efficient strategies to manage the illness.

-This happens because the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible, making it harder to change shape and focus on close-up tasks like reading.

Common symptoms of presbyopia include:

1.Difficulty reading small print, especially in low light.
2.The need to hold reading material at arm’s length to see clearly.
3.Eye strain or headaches after doing close-up work.

About PresVu:

-PresVu’s active ingredient is pilocarpine, a chemical molecule found in pharmaceuticals that has an effect on the body.

-According to Entod Pharmaceuticals, the substance compresses the iris muscles, which govern the size of the pupil and help humans see clearly, allowing their eyes to focus more on adjacent objects.

-PresVu also claims to employ “advanced dynamic buffer technology” — effectively, a base solution — to adjust to the pH level of tears. This guarantees that the eye drop has “consistent efficacy and safety for extended use, keeping in mind that such drops will be used for years at a stretch”.

-PresVu is a prescription-only medication, and experts say its effects are unlikely to endure more than four to six hours. People suffering from iris inflammation should avoid using it. PresVu use on a regular basis may cause itchiness and redness, brow pain, and eye muscle spasms.

-Entod’s claims suggest that PresVu is a new therapy, pilocarpine, the key ingredient in the eye drop, has been available in India for decades.

What is Pilocarpine?

-Pilocarpine is a medication primarily used to treat conditions like dry mouth (xerostomia) and glaucoma. It is a cholinergic drug, meaning it stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system. In glaucoma, it helps reduce pressure in the eye by increasing the drainage of aqueous humor (fluid in the eye), thus helping to prevent damage to the optic nerve. For dry mouth, it stimulates saliva production.

-Pilocarpine is usually administered as eye drops for glaucoma or as oral tablets for dry mouth. Its side effects may include sweating, increased salivation, and blurred vision.

Correction of Presbyopia:

Presbyopia, an age-related condition that makes it hard to see objects, can be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses, eye drops, or surgery:

Eyeglasses:
Reading glasses are a simple and safe way to correct presbyopia. You can try over-the-counter reading glasses if you had good vision before developing presbyopia. You can also get prescription reading glasses from your eye doctor.

Eye drops:
Vuity is a prescription eye drop that can improve near vision for about six hours.

Conductive keratoplasty:
This noninvasive in-office procedure uses radiofrequency energy to correct presbyopia.

Surgery:
Other surgical options include FemtoLASIK PRESBYOND, scleral expansion surgery, and intraocular lens implants.
